Holiday Traditions: Keep or Toss out: SSS

Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 9 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

Holiday Traditions...keep them or toss them? Well, I think that too many things from the past are being tossed and traditions is one of them. I grew up with traditions from my mom's family. Every Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas were the same every year, like clock work. My family was not spontaneous or adventurous maybe that's why I am.
Some things I continued with my kids. Like stockings at Christmas. My boys are grown with children of their own and each year at 31, 27 and 25 they will ask "you're doing stockings, right Mom?". Another tradition is putting up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. We didn't go to "black Friday sales" because back then the stores were closed.
We have ham for Easter, turkey for Thanksgiving and both for Christmas. Why? Because that's how I grew up. I have done it differently but it felt weird.
We opened our Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve at my house and my stocking the next morning along with whatever Santa brought. I did not do Santa with my kids. We would then load up the car with food and gifts and head to my grandparents farm. Everyone would gather and we'd eat, have dessert, clean the kitchen, put away the food and THEN and only then would grandmama let us open presents. It was so hard waiting! AND we would each get a gift and one by one open them, hold them up and model them if it was clothes before we could move on. As a kid that was the worst. LOL
We went to church on Easter and hid eggs that afternoon. That never made sense to me, what did eggs have to do with a bunny and what did a bunny have to do with the resurrection of Christ.
So there are somethings I continued with my family and some I did not. I honestly think that traditions keep families close and if the tradition was started and the meaning passed on it provides a root/history of the family.
I hope my kids continue with some of the traditions we started for them. One I know they enjoyed was if a present came in the mail before your birthday or Christmas you could open it then and not wait. They always enjoyed that!
Another tradition we had was that on your birthday you got to pick the food for the day. Not just one meal, but the day. No matter what. We could eat your favorite foods all day and go out at night or I'd fix their requested meal along with dessert. Definitely a favorite tradition.
Each year the boys would get some clothes and a movie or CD for their birthday along with a requested item. Now that they are grown the request are for food or money. LOL boys, right?!
Most of our traditions center around Christmas and birthdays but growing up my mom tried to make each and every holiday special. She has always sent out cards and still does, for every holiday along with a cake and candy for the kids. She has also always decorated for every holiday. That was her tradition because my grandmother never did. I did the same when the kids were growing up and this year I feel the need to return to that tradition but I'm not sure why. Maybe nostalgia?
Anyway, that's my take. I'll keep my traditions, create a few and maybe switch it up from time to to time but definitely keeping them.

Ode to My Sock

Welcome and happy May 9th. Today a few of us are sharing our take on the theme "lost sock memorial day" in poetry form. Who came up with this memorial? I'm thinking a mom with several kids who never have matching socks. In her exasperation and possible venting, she spoke to the right person and Viola! Lost Sock Memorial Day was born.

Ode To My Sock

Opening the drawer
I see no more
Where have the socks gone
In the hamper?
In the trash?
Maybe between the washer and wall
I can't find them all
Searching high
searching low
did wings grow
did they take flight
Once more to the dryer
nothing but lint
back to the dresser
finding not one hint
purse in hand
to the store I go
to buy one more pack
or should I lack
forget socks
forget shoes
bare feet it is

Poem 2
Where are my socks he said
look in the drawer
Do you think I'm a bore
Of course I looked in the drawer
 to the dryer
look insider her
nothing but lint
not even a hint
Where did they go
did someone hide them
but who
are they in my shoe
not in the shoe
not in the basket
not in the drawer
what ever will I do
wait for part 2...

Holiday Hideaway - SSS

Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 10 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

Your “Secret Subject” is:: Are family get-togethers something you look forward to or dread during the holidays?  Or would you rather run away to a resort and celebrate the holiday with your significant other?
It was submitted by: https://batteredhope.blogspot.com

Well that's easy. A holiday hideaway is what I choose.

A lake side cabin where we could watch the sunrise and set. Relax and only do what we wanted. Read, talk, rest, hike, fish, boat or absolutely nothing at all.

Something like this. Doesn't it look wonderful?
We could cook outside over an open fire. Maybe even fish we caught earlier.
Enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while the sun rises over the lake while we decide what to do with our day.
My husband would definitely spend time fishing while I would walk around the lake, find a spot to sit and read or just breath.
After a long day of enjoyment, a nice drink on the deck while the food is sizzling over the fire.
Maybe even rent a paddle boat and take it once around the lake.
We have actually talked about this very thing and it is on our "to do" list. We both love our families but they can and do stress us out, make ridiculous demands, last minute plans that always end up being very inconvenient for us but no one else. His siblings are as different as oil and water so they do not mix well or as we used to say as kids "do not play well with others" so if I had a choice, which as an adult I do, I will always side on being "just the two of us" or a get away!
Thanks Carol!

Exuberant Vacation

Today is the day! We set off on our family vacation. The kids are totally beside themselves with anticipation. I am busy trying to get everyone organized and packed.
Finally later in the day, the packing is done, the garden has been harvested one last time before we leave and the kids were outside chasing firefly or lightening bugs. They are giddy and I'm praying they will sleep tonight. Twilight was a perfect time for catching these lovely
The 4th of July, a family vacation, fireworks, walks on the beach, playing in the surf, sipping Mia Tia's by the pool...ah yes I am so ready for this.
After a restless night, I kept going over the packing list in my head, it was dawn and since sleep eluded me, I gave in and started prepping for our departure.
Wouldn't you know it, I didn't even get the first cup of coffee down before the herd came barreling down the steps. WOW how could they possibly be so exuberant and loud so early in the morning?
So with my list in hand I start assigning task, if not this crowd will be running around and I'll be stuck doing all the work.
Door bell rings, kids go berserk, dog is barking, cat is hissing, I'm about to pull out my hair! Then I hear the voice of an angel!! It's my dear sweet just in the nick of time friend Di. She has come to house/pet sit while we are away and aide me in getting this crowd loaded. Oh gosh I don't know what I'd do without her.
We discuss details, she helps corral the troops and load the jeep. Much sooner than I had thought we are barreling down the road singing 70's songs at the top of our lungs.
Yes, this vacation is just what we need.

Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.

At the end of this post you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.
